Initiation and Circumcision
The biggest and most decisive event in the life of an adolescent is his or her initiation into the community of the tribe.
Whereas the very young children are mostly educated by their mothers and sometimes the other women in the family, as soon as they turn three or four, they join small groups, along with other children of the same age. Together, they play and explore the village and its surroundings.

"Bala": sea, "Kulandjan": a long legged bird. The Balakulandjan is hunting for fish in the sea and this bird has said to the humans:
"I tell you: Children are the most important thing in life. Woman who do not bear children can ask for my help. Bring hundred things - and I will help you."

=Song=
Balakulandjan! Den de ka fissa!
Keme ta iye n'so den na!
I ba keme ke den kelen sonko di.
Keme ta iye n'so den na!
Balakulandjan! A child is better than anything (in the world)!
Take a hundred (things) and give me a child!
I give a hundred as a gift to receive a child.
Take a hundred and give me a child!

Soko
-99KB each
Traditional Ethnic Group: Malinke
Faranah Region of upper Guinea

The rhythm accompanies the dance of bilakoros(non-circumcized children). In some regions it's played during the months before cicumcision.
After the village elders have decided the date of the circumcision, the imminence of this event must be announced. For this reason, the children go from village to village to notify their relatives about the event. When they arrive in each village, Soko is played.

Soli slow
-116KB each
Traditional Ethnic Group: Malinke
All over Guinea

The rhythm Soli accompanies the rituals of initiation and circumcision. Contrary to what one may observe in Conakry, in the countryside, one never hears the rhythm without the appropriate fundamental rituals. Even though circumcision is often done in the hospital today, the rhythm still marks the transition to adulthood.

=Song=
