Girls and Women
Women in Africa have created a lot of rhythms. In the past, the djembe was played only by men. In the twentieth century and in the course of emancipation, women have begun to play djembe.

There are many rhythms for women. Mendiani is known as a rhythm for girls.

Wassolon Region

Djabara is a kind of instrument played by the women.
It is a calabash covered with a net braided with cowrie shells.
It's from the Wassolon-region and is a rhythm of greeting of guests of the village.
During the colonization, it was urged to play this rhythm for french gouvernement officials.

Northeast Guinea

Mendiani is a rhythm and a dance for the vergins, the young girls from age six to thirteen.
When Mendiani festivals occur young men carry the girls on their shoulders to the center of the village.
Upon arriving in the village center, they are greeted by the drummers with the rhythm Denadon. After that, the girls take off their masks and the percussionists change to the Mendiani rhythm.

Northeast Guinea

Moribayassa is the name of a very old rhythm and dance.
The rhythm is played exclusively for the joyful dance of a woman who has overcome a difficult situation.
