Abondan is a rhythm which was played when the king went out to ride on the horse. The story goes that boys and girls danced in honor of the King. After that dance the King gave a speech.
Today, Abondan is a popular rhythm that is danced in a circle.

Traditional Ethnic Group: Malinke
Northeast Guinea

Sofa means "warrior" in Malinke language. The rhythm was played for the warriors on horseback. It was supposed to support the brave and strong men who went to combat, as well as a praise them for their succes and bravery when they came back. In the old days it was played on the Bolon, a string instrument. The Bolon was played by "Griots des Guerre" (griots of the warriors) or griots who knew the history and had sung the praises of the wars and the warriors for generations.
